3 Ways to Cook Tomahawk Steak

The tomahawk steak is a high-quality cut of meat that’s impressive in both flavor and appearance. This bone-in ribeye has at least five inches of rib bone still attached, which gives the steak its robust flavor and unique look resembling a tomahawk axe. 

There are many ways to cook tomahawk steak. When cooked properly, this prized cut boasts a rich, buttery flavor and melt-in-your-mouth texture. No matter which method you choose, the first step to cooking a great tomahawk steak is to buy a great tomahawk steak from State Street Meats.

Measuring Doneness of Tomahawk Steak

Always use a meat thermometer to determine to the doneness of your steak. You should remove your steak from heat when it reaches 5 degrees less than the desired temperature. Then, be sure to let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.

  • Rare: 125°F
  • Medium Rare: 135°F
  • Medium: 145°F
  • Medium Well: 155°F

How to Cook Tomahawk Steak

Before cooking your steak, be sure to take it out of the fridge ahead of time and let it rest at room temperature for 30-40 minutes. Then, you’ll want to pat it dry with paper towels and liberally season with salt on all sides. Now that you’re ready to get cooking, here are three of the best ways to cook tomahawk steak:

1. Grill

Approximate cooking times for a grilled 2-inch-thick tomahawk steak: Rare –18-20 mins, Medium Rare: 20-22 mins, Medium: 22-24 mins

Preheat your gas grill to high. Sear steak on both sides for one minute. Then, reduce heat to medium and continue to grill for the desired time listed below, turning steak at the halfway point.

2. Reverse Sear

Approximate cooking times for a reverse seared 2-inch-thick tomahawk steak– Rare: 35-40 mins, Medium Rare: 40-45 mins, Medium: 45-50 mins

Preheat oven to 275°F. Place steak on a rimmed baking sheet and place baking sheet on the center rack of the oven. Cook until internal temperature reaches 10°F lower than the desired final temperature. Remove and cover steak loosely with foil. Let rest for 5 minutes. While steak is resting, preheat a heavy nonstick or cast-iron skillet over high heat until very hot. Add a tablespoon of butter and sear steak for one minute on each side. 

3. Broil

Approximate cooking times for a broiled 2-inch-thick tomahawk steak– Rare: 17-19 mins, Medium Rare: 19-21 mins, Medium: 21-23 mins

Set oven for broil and preheat for 10 minutes. Place steak on the rack of a broiler pan. Position broiler pan in oven so that the steak is 4-6 inches from the heat. According to the times listed below, broil to desired doneness, turning steak at the halfway point.
